Teleprompter Apps That Follow Your Voice: 5 Compared (2026)

By Rex McArtor

Most teleprompter apps scroll at a speed you pick and leave you to keep up. A voice-following prompter listens instead: the script moves when you speak and stops when you stop. If you ad-lib, stumble or pause to think, you don't lose your place.

These are the five phone apps I found that do this, compared on what actually decides it for most people: which phones it runs on, and whether you pay once or every month.

Disclosure: I make FeatherCue, the first app in this list. I've kept the others to facts you can check on their own store pages, and each one links to its source. Prices are the US listings on October 15, 2026, and they do change.

The short answer

  • Cheapest way to own a voice-following prompter: FeatherCue. Free to download, and Pro is US$4.99 once.
  • Longest track record: PromptSmart Pro. It has been on the App Store for years with thousands of ratings, but it costs US$29.99 up front.
  • You also want a web or desktop prompter: Teleprompter.com runs on phones, Mac and the web under one account. Its paid plans are subscriptions.

What to look for in a voice teleprompter

It has to wait for you

Following a perfect read is the easy part. The real test is what happens when you go off script: do you get dragged forward, or does the script hold on the last word you read until you come back to it? Try this before paying. Read a paragraph, ad-lib a sentence, then carry on.

Notes it doesn't try to hear

Most scripts carry notes like “pause”, “cut to B-roll” or “camera two” that you never say out loud. A voice prompter that waits for those words just stalls. In FeatherCue you wrap them in double dashes (-- like this --): they stay on screen and Voice Scroll skips them.

Mirror mode, if you use a rig

Beam-splitter teleprompters reflect the phone screen off angled glass, which reverses the text. You need a horizontal mirror setting to read it. If you only prompt straight off the phone, you can ignore this.

How you pay, over a year

A subscription that looks cheap per month adds up. Before you start a trial, work out what twelve months costs against a one-time price.

Where each one fits

FeatherCue

I built FeatherCue for my own YouTube videos because I didn't want to rent a prompter. Voice Scroll follows you word by word and holds when you ad-lib. Stage directions are skipped. Auto Scroll, import and the editor are free, and Pro adds Voice Scroll on your own scripts, video recording, mirror and flip for rigs, and watch remotes for a single US$4.99. No account, no ads. The honest downsides: it's new (it launched in July 2026), so it has far fewer reviews than PromptSmart, and Voice Scroll has been tuned and tested mainly in English. There's no Mac or web version.

PromptSmart Pro

The best-known name in voice-following prompters. Its listing describes VoiceTrack as starting and stopping “at the speaker's natural pace”, notes that it supports English only, and shows about 11,000 ratings. It's a US$29.99 paid app on the US App Store, with an optional “Extended” subscription on top.

Teleprompter.com

The broadest platform coverage here: iPhone, Android, Mac and the web under one account, with voice scrolling it calls VoiceGlide. Its pricing page shows voice-activated scrolling on every plan, including the free Starter plan. Pro is US$19.99 a month, or US$7.50 a month billed yearly.

VoicePrompter: Teleprompter

Free to download, with voice scrolling plus sound-triggered and constant-speed modes. Paid access is US$9.99 a month, US$49.99 a year or US$99.99 lifetime on the US App Store.

▶Teleprompter

An established iPhone prompter whose listing advertises voice scrolling. It offers a one-time US$8.99 Pro upgrade alongside several subscriptions. The listing shows more than one annual price, so check what you're buying in the App Store.

Frequently asked questions

Do voice teleprompter apps work offline?

It depends on the phone's speech recognition. FeatherCue uses the recognizer built into iOS or Android. Depending on your device and language, that can run on the phone itself or send audio to Apple or Google. FeatherCue never uploads your scripts or recordings to us.

Is there a free teleprompter that follows your voice?

Teleprompter.com's free Starter plan lists voice-activated scrolling. FeatherCue lets you try Voice Scroll free on its built-in guide script, and Auto Scroll is free forever. Using Voice Scroll on your own scripts needs the one-time Pro purchase.

Can I use a voice teleprompter with a beam-splitter rig?

Yes, if the app has a mirror mode. I film my YouTube videos that way. Here's my exact two-phone setup.

Try FeatherCue

The teleprompter app I film with. Free on iPhone and Android, and you can try Voice Scroll on the built-in guide. Pro is a one-time US$4.99, never a subscription.
