Scotland: Ancient and Macabre

A 24-day road trip through Scotland's ancient sites and dark history, one day per episode, in the order we traveled. Three people, one rental car, starting in Edinburgh and heading down through the Borders, up the west coast, across the Highlands, out to Orkney and Shetland, and back to Edinburgh.

Along the way: the castle where Scotland's nobles agreed to get rid of Mary, Queen of Scots' husband, the heart of Robert the Bruce at Melrose Abbey, the Glencoe Massacre, mortsafes and body snatchers, a 5,000-year-old village and chambered tombs on Orkney, Viking longhouses on Unst, and the underground vaults beneath Edinburgh.
